International Video Chat using Skype

Professor Rujie Wang and College of Wooster students studying Chinese had a video chat with faculty and students at Xi’an International Studies University in Xi’an, China. The program used to do this is called Skype. It is a free program which allows you to text message, audio chat and video chat with other Skype users. Below is a video of Prof. Wang and his students using Skype. What might it mean pedagogically to have students able to engage so easily and regularly with native speakers?

It’s great to see our faculty begin to take advantage of Skype!
If you google for pertinent terms you can find a wealth pedagogical examples—many schools, including Oberlin [http://www.oberlin.edu/news-info/05dec/language.html] and quite a few high schools [http://www.tes.co.uk/blogs/blog.aspx?path=/ICT/01%20Joe%20Dale/&post=2305597] —are putting this technology to good use.

How do you find native speakers willing to speak to your class? I teach Spanish at a rural high school.
